MEDICINE ETHICS & HUMAN VALUES SEMINAR:

Stay Tuned for Upcoming Seminars.

On Friday, April 16 "National Healthcare Decisions Day" the Center for Humane and Ethical Care (CHEC) at SM-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital offered free packets containing the Advance Health Care Directive document and other informational materials. A total of 200 packets were given out. 5 educational seminars on the "Importance of Advance Health Care Directives" were requested by community organizations and within the Hospital System.

The Advance Health Care Directive discussion and form exists to protect your freedom of choice and your autonomy. It also may help an anxious family and doctor know your wishes.

We encourage you to take a look at the April 1 article on advance directives published in the New England Journal of Medicine.  A summary can be found here. This article reports on a study that provides some very encouraging statistics about the efficacy of advance directives--when they exist.  Obviously, there is much more work to be done and more research is needed, but, at a minimum, the results confirm that what we are doing is important and meaningful.

In 2005, Terri Schiavo, 41, died after a long contentious battle between her husband and her parents in the most devisive - and most heavily litigated dispute on her right-to-live/die. Read More Here.
